Master Builder Overview
Cultivating the heart and minds of young people while building impactful leaders through effective math and science instruction and strategic community transformation.
History
Master Builder began as
MOVES, a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1995, which partnered with
local Elementary Schools through Colleges, industry, and community
organizations to motivate students in the areas of math, science and
engineering; and to improve problem solving, creativity and teamwork skills.
MOVES also wrote curriculum, consulted and trained teachers in various parts of
the country. Stemming from MOVES, Master Builder seeks to build knowledge,
understanding and wisdom in youth by the use of math, science and engineering
project as a vehicle to teach character and purpose.

Master Builder Community Clubs - a three year program for grades 6-8
Program Success:
Summary of Data from Austin police Department Sponsored Austin Eastside Story Master Builder Program (Fall 2004)
From eight 5th and 6th grade students, there was an average TAKS pre-post test score knowledge improvement of 58% and a character understanding test score improvement of 43%.
Summary of Data from AISD Webb Middle School Master Builder Program (2003/2004 school year)
Both Webb Gr. 8 AVID sections had 19 students with score-able TAKS Math tests. Among students who passed, students in Section 1 (Master Builder Class) had a higher average scale score (2256 vs. 2179) than students in Section 2. Students in Section 1 also had an overall higher scale score (2128) than students in Section 2 (2104).
Measurement and evaluation standards:
- Increase Application of Science Skills by 10% through presentation of concepts and terms, usage in teamwork projects; and measured by pre and post Master Builder Skills Assessment
- Increase Math Knowledge and Math TAKS Test Scores by 20% Increases through review of sample TAKS questions as related to team projects, review games/activities; and measured by pre and post Master Builder Mathematics TAKS Assessment
- Increase understanding of character skills by 10% through dramas, role-play, demonstrations, and positive rewards and measured by Master Builder Character Test and observations
NOTE: All of which also increases Work Preparation, Career awareness and awareness of Real-world math, science & character connections to classroom academics. Sessions based on 10 one-hour classes and Math TAKS percentage increase based on raw scores (percentage of number correct) for non-passing students.
